Kona | Kona is famous for sportfishing, snorkeling, sunsets and coffee. It means “leeward” in Hawaiian and stretches along the isle’s west side. |
Hilo | With lots of rain, you will find Hilo exceptionally green and fertile. Historic Downtown Hilo is alive and bustling. More laid back from the hustle of more touristy Hawaii, one can find great bargains in this quaint town. Its diverse shopping opportunities, small scale, and friendliness makes Hilo an enchanting town to visit and explore. |
Rainbow Falls | The 80-foot Rainbow Falls is renowned for the rainbow formed from its mist many mornings. Legends say that the cave beneath the waterfall was the home of Hina, mother of the demigod Maui. |
Kilauea | Kilauea has been continuously erupting since 1983. |
Volcanoes National Park | This 377 square mile park on Hawaii's Big Island is a living museum where visitors can witness the power of Hawaii's volcanoes in surprisingly intimate ways. You'll feel great mana, or spiritual power, here as you hike along rocky trails and desolate deserts that in time will flourish and thrive with new life. |
Kealakekua Bay | Kealakekua Bay is an important historic location as well, marking the death of Captain James Cook in 1779. Cook was the first British explorer to establish contact with the Hawaiian Islands in 1778. Only a year later, he was killed in a skirmish with native Hawaiians. A white obelisk on the shore of Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park memorializes his death. |
Puuhonua o Honaunau | This 180-acre national historic park was once a place of refuge for ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers.A kapu-breaker's only chance for survival was to evade his pursuers and make it to a puuhonua, or a sacred place of refuge. Once there, a ceremony of absolution would take place and the law-breaker would be able to return to society. |
Punalu'u Beach Park | The most famous black sand beach on the island. |
Waipio Valley | Waipi'o is a mile wide at the coast and almost six miles deep. At the coast there is a beautiful black sand beach. On either side of the valley are cliffs reaching almost 2000 feet with cascading waterfalls. |
